Seed Library can help your garden grow

Posted

If you’ve ever thought about starting your own home garden, now is the perfect time to give it a try. Cumberland County Public Library is excited to announce the launch of our very own Seed Library.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just curious about gardening, our Seed Library has everything you need to start or expand your garden. It’s a fantastic resource for beginners and experienced gardeners alike, and we encourage people of all ages and skill levels to get involved.

The Seed Library works just like borrowing a library book. Library patrons have the opportunity to "borrow" seeds. Choose the seeds you want, grow them into plants and then return the harvested seeds at the end of the season.

This cycle of seed sharing and cultivation not only fosters a sense of community but also encourages the exchange of knowledge and expertise among fellow gardeners.

If you’re ready to set up your first garden, start by thinking about your available space. It could be a backyard, a balcony or even just a sunny windowsill. Sunlight and watering needs are important considerations.

Next, decide on the types of plants you want to grow. If you’re new to gardening, it is best to start with easy-to-grow, low-maintenance plants like herbs, salad greens or cherry tomatoes. Also consider your location and the time of year when choosing plants that will thrive in your area.

Remember, it’s important to start small and be patient. Gardening is a learning process, and it takes time to develop your skills. Embrace the joy of nurturing your plants and witnessing them grow. Before you know it, you will be reaping the rewards of your own thriving home garden.

If you’re interested in learning more, don’t miss our Seed Library launch on July 8 at Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane. A representative of Cumberland County Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener program will cover the basics of starting a home garden. Join us at 3 p.m. for the presentation and question-and-answer period followed by the unveiling of the Seed Library.

You will walk away with seeds and all the information you need to get started on your gardening journey. We can’t wait to see you there.

For more information about the Seed Library and other library resources, stop by one of our eight locations, call 910-483-7727 or visit cumberlandcountync.gov and check out our calendar.
