Sheriff's Office responds to community concerns about hate groups

Posted

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of the community's concerns about hate groups targeting churches, according to a statement it released Monday.

The Sheriff's Office said one church was vandalized and threats were made toward another different church. There has been no evidence to tie the two incidents together.

"The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has no evidence nor reason to prove these crimes were committed by hate groups," the statement said. "We will not tolerate any hateful behavior or acts toward our businesses, churches, or our citizens. We want to remind everyone to remain vigilant in the community and call 911 to report any problems. If your church, business, or home has security cameras, check them to make sure they are in working order. If your business or church has parking lot lights, make sure they are in operating order so that outside areas are well-lit for your customers and congregation."

The Sheriff’s Office said it was working diligently to ensure that Cumberland County is a safe place for those who live and work here. Those with information can call the Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500.
