Emergency repairs are underway after heavy rainfall overnight opened a sinkhole on Raeford Road in western Fayetteville, the state Department of Transportation said Tuesday.
On South Reilly Road, the Fayetteville Police Department reported that downed power lines caused by stormy weather led to a power failure and the road being closed. All lanes were closed on South Reilly Road from Lexi Lane to Willowbrook Drive, according to a news release Tuesday morning.
DOT is working with contractor Highland Paving Co. on repairs to the eastbound section of Raeford Road near Seventy-First High School, a news release said. Westbound lanes of Raeford Road remain closed to make room for heavy equipment being used for the repair work.
DOT officials expect to reopen all lanes of Raeford Road by Tuesday evening.
Drivers should use Graham Road and Strickland Bridge Road as a detour or seek other alternate routes.
Highland Paving is under a contract with DOT to upgrade this section of Raeford Road with new storm drainage systems, concrete curb and gutters, and improved medians, the news release said.
