Wayne Smith, 90, of Fayetteville passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Wayne was born March 16, 1932 in Carroll County, VA to the late Eliza Ann Boyd and Edward Hoke Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Woody Smith; brothers, Edward Hoke Smith, Jr., Thomas Franklin Smith, Robert Coolidge “R.C.” Smith, Eugene “Jack” Smith, Charles Smith; and sisters, Opal Ayers, Mary Montgomery, and Frances Mankins.
Wayne was a Marine combat veteran who served in the Korean War. He later transferred to the Air Force upon his return from Korea.
He was a retired office manager for the N.C. Presbyterian Synod and J.C. Penney. After retirement he went back to work for the Cumberland County Board of Elections.
Wayne was a faithful member of Peace Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder, Sunday School teacher, and choir member.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Peace Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 1-2:00 pm.
Wayne is survived by his son, Anthony Wayne Smith (Dianne); granddaughter, Melissa Renee Smith; sister, Margaret Davis (George).
The family would like to thank the team at Cape Fear Valley’s Intensive Care Unit for their dedication to Wayne’s care.
