Writers’ group is back at the library

Posted

Dear writers: Your passion does not have to be a lonely ordeal. You can hang out with other creative people in one of the longest-running writers groups in the area: the Cumberland County Public Library’s Write On, Right Now (WORN): The Sequel.

This revised version of the original group has been busy rebuilding its membership rolls since the decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants meet in person at 3 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month at North Regional Library, 855 McArthur Road in Fayetteville. The group helps emerging and more established authors reach their goals by sharing successes, learning techniques and discussing all aspects of creative writing.

Keep in mind, however, that WORN members spend most meetings offering each other critiques in the spirit of improving their writing and learning techniques for using the tools of a successful author.

WORN members may even explore ways to reach agents and publishers and to market themselves and their published works. Participants are encouraged to set their own goals or write to monthly prompts provided by the group.

In addition to the monthly meetings, WORN will host a Write-In, Welcome to Camp NaNoWriMo, to coincide with the beginning of National Novel Writing Month’s Camp NaNoWriMo. This event will encourage you to set a writing, editing or other creative goal to achieve during July.

Drop by North Regional Library anytime on July 1 to get started. Coffee and tea will be provided. Bring your own writing gear or use one of our laptops on a first-come, first-served basis.

If writing isn’t your pastime of choice, the library offers plenty of other interesting choices.

"Dungeons and Dragons: An Introduction to the Classic Roleplaying Game" launches at 2 p.m. July 2 at North Regional Library and continues the first and third Sundays of each month. New players and newbie players are welcome. (I haven’t played in 40 years.) Discover together what makes this the most popular role-playing game ever.

Suppose you’re more motivated by money. Learn how to research investments online with "Analyzing Stocks and Mutual Funds With Morningstar Investment Research Center." This free training will be offered at 10 a.m. July 15 at Cliffdale Regional Library, 6882 Cliffdale Road.

You can find more things to learn and do -– both in person and virtually -– in the library’s calendar of events. Visit www.cumberlandcountync.gov/library/events or call us at 910-483-7727 for more information.
