With the 2024 election cycle on the horizon, the filing period for North Carolina candidates closed Friday, and Cumberland County voters now have just under three months to decide who will get their support.
The following North Carolina candidates are running for federal and statewide offices in the March 5 primary. The filing period closed at noon on Friday, and the winners will advance to the general election in November.
This list does not include presidential candidates. The North Carolina State Board of Elections office said its board will process names submitted for president at a meeting later this month, as specified by state law.
United States House of Representatives
District 7
- Democratic candidates
- Marlando D. Pridgen of Columbus County
- Republican candidates
- Incumbent Rep. David Rouzer of Wilmington. Rouzer has served since 2015.
District 9
- Democratic candidates
- Nigel William Bristow, a retired law enforcement officer from Richmond County.
- Republican candidates
- Incumbent Rep. Richard Hudson of Southern Pines. Hudson has served since 2013.
- Troy L. Tarazon of western Harnett County
Governor
Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, who has held the position since January 2017, is leaving office due to term limits.

- Michael R. “Mike” Morgan, former North Carolina Supreme Court justice, from Raleigh
- Marcus W. Williams, an attorney from Lumberton

- Gary Foxx from Rocky Mount
- Republican candidates
- Dale Folwell, incumbent state treasurer, from Winston Salem
- Bill Graham, an attorney from Salisbury
- Mark Robinson, incumbent lieutenant governor, from High Point

- Libertarian candidates
- Shannon W. Bray, a technology entrepreneur from Holly Springs
- Mike Ross, a certified financial planner from Cramerton
Lieutenant Governor
Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is leaving office to run for governor.
- Democratic candidates
- Ben Clark, former state senator, from Cumberland County. Clark represented state Senate Dist. 21, serving Hoke and Cumberland counties, from 2013 to 2023.
- State Sen. Rachel Hunt, of Charlotte; daughter of former N.C. Gov. Jim Hunt.
- Mark H. Robinson, an investor, of southern Sampson County
- Republican candidates
- Rivera Douthit of Mooresville
- Deanna Ballard, former state senator, from Watauga County
- State Rep. Jeffrey Elmore of North Wilkesboro. Elmore represents Alexander and Wilkes counties in Dist. 94.
- Hal Weatherman, former chief of staff to former Lt. Gov. Dan Forest and former U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick, from Wake Forest
- Marlenis Hernandez Novoa, a paramedic firefighter from Wake County
- Allen Mashburn, a minister from Seagrove
- Peter Boykin, founder of Gays for Trump, from Mebane
- Seth Woodall, an attorney, from Eden
- Sam Page, sheriff of Rockingham County
- Jim O’Neill, incumbent district attorney in Forsyth County who previously ran as the Republican candidate in the 2020 race for attorney general
- Ernest T. Reeves, a veteran from Greenville
- Libertarian candidates
- Dee Watson, secretary of the Libertarian Party of North Carolina and a statistician, from Caswell Beach
Attorney General
This seat is open as Attorney General Josh Stein is running for governor.

- Satana Deberry, incumbent district attorney in Durham County
- U.S. Rep Jeff Jackson, who represents parts of Mecklenburg and Gatson counties.
- Republican candidates
- U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop, who represents Anson, Davidson, Montgomery, Rowan, Stanly and Union counties and parts of Cabarrus and Richmond counties.
State Auditor
Democratic State Auditor Beth Wood left office in December after she was indicted. Democrat Jessica Holmes was appointed to complete her term, and is running for the seat.

- Anthony Wayne “Tony” Street of Brunswick County. Street was the Republican candidate for state auditor in 2020.
- Dave Boliek, a longtime attorney in Cumberland County, of Durham
Commissioner of Agriculture
Incumbent Steve Troxler is seeking a sixth term in office.

- Colby “Bear” Hammonds, a veteran from Wake County

Commissioner of Insurance
Incumbent Mike Causey is seeking a third term in office.

- State Sen. Natasha Marcus from Davidson. Marcus, who is in her third term in office, serves Dist. 41, which covers part of Mecklenburg County.
- Republican candidates
- Mike Causey, incumbent state commissioner of insurance, of Greensboro
- C. Robert Brawley of Mooresville, former state representative. Brawley represented Dist. 95, covering part of Iredell County, from 2012 to 2015.
- Andrew Marcus, an attorney from Chapel Hill
Commissioner of Labor
Republican Commissioner of Labor Josh Dobson, who announced in December 2022 that he would not seek reelection, is leaving office.

- State Rep. Jon Hardister of Whitsett. Hardister, who has been in office since 2013, serves Dist. 59, which covers part of Guilford County, and is the deputy majority whip.

Secretary of State
Democratic Secretary of State Elaine Marshall is running for her eighth term in office. She has served as secretary of state since 1997.

Incumbent Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt is in her first term.

State Treasurer
Republican state Treasurer Dale Folwell is leaving office to run for governor.

- State Rep. Wesley Harris of Charlotte, who currently serves District 105, which covers part of Mecklenburg County. He has served three terms in the N.C. House of Representatives.

Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, Seat 6
Associate Justice Allison Riggs will seek election after being appointed to her seat by Gov. Roy Cooper in September. Former Justice Mike Morgan previously held the seat.

Judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals, Seat 12
Incumbent Judge Carolyn Jennings Thompson will seek election. She was appointed to her office in September by Gov. Cooper to fill the vacancy left by Judge Allison Riggs after Cooper appointed Riggs to the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Incumbent Judge Valerie Zachary will seek reelection to the office she has held since 2015.
