The Cumberland County Department of Public Health will be closed Wednesday while repairs are done to the air-conditioning system.

The Health Department closed at 11 a.m. Tuesday when the air-conditioning stopped working, county officials said.

County Facilities and Maintenance crews are working to install an emergency chiller that will allow the facility to reopen, the county said in a release. Information regarding the department’s operations Thursday will be provided by Wednesday afternoon, the county said.

COVID-19 testing is still available in the Health Department parking lot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments for monkeypox vaccinations and testing will be rescheduled, the release said.

The WIC offices in Spring Lake and Hope Mills and the Environmental Health offices at the historic courthouse on Gillespie Street are not affected.

The Health Department had been designated as a cooling center for people trying to escape the heat. It will not be used as a cooling station for the remainder of this week, the release said. The Department of Social Services at 1225 Ramsey St. has opened the auxiliary lobby as a cooling station. It will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
