Amazon announced today that it is expanding its operations in Cumberland County, confirming the construction of a 1.3 million-square-foot fulfillment facility in the Military Business Park off Bragg Boulevard.
The distribution center is expected to create more than 500 full-time jobs in addition to hundreds of part-time opportunities.
“Amazon is excited to expand operations in Cumberland County, North Carolina, investing in a new fulfilment center in Fayetteville,” Nikki Forman, a spokesperson for Amazon, said in a news release. “We are committed to providing efficient delivery for customers and creating hundreds of jobs for the talented workforce in the area.”
The new center is under construction on 94 acres and is expected to begin operations in 2023, the Fayetteville Cumberland County Economic Development Corp. said in a release. The center will receive products into the company’s fulfillment network and get them ready for shipment to consumers.
This is Amazon’s second project in Cumberland County. In May, it announced a new last-mile facility that is under construction at 1005 Dunn Road.
“This Amazon facility in the Military Business Park means hundreds of new jobs for our county, as well as economic growth and advancement,’’ Glenn Adams, chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, said in the release. “This transformative investment is a major win for our community.’’
Fayetteville and Cumberland County each approved up to $1.25 million to assist with infrastructure improvements on the project. To receive those incentives, the company must meet job and investment goals, the release said.
Cumberland County’s highly skilled workforce, solid labor market – enhanced by many of the 7,000 service members transitioning from Fort Bragg each year – were all factors in Amazon’s decision, the release said. It also cited the county’s geographic location and access to major interstates.
“I welcome the significant positive impact that Amazon will make here,’’ Mayor Mitch Colvin said in the release. “The fact that Amazon has twice selected to invest in our area sends a strong signal to other potential employers about the many wonderful benefits this region has to offer, from our central location to the thriving workforce, and excellent business climate.”
Kelvin Farmer, chairman of the Fayetteville Cumberland County Economic Development Corp., said bringing innovative companies like Amazon to the area is the group’s focus.
“We are excited to see what the future holds in terms of economic growth for the community and proud to have Amazon at the top of our list of growing local employers,” Farmer said.
