City Center Gallery & Books will host a book signing by Steve DeVane, a reporter and editor at the Fayetteville Observer for more than 10 years. His book is titled “Your Midlife: The Playbook for Your Second Half.”
County, city to open cooling stations with heat advisory in effect
The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a heat advisory for three days beginning Saturday. Heat index values will be over 100 degrees on Saturday through Tuesday, according to a Cumberland County news release.
Charges sought against juvenile in shooting death of 8-year-old girl
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is asking that a manslaughter charge be filed against a juvenile in connection with the July 27 shooting death of an 8-year-old girl. Jenesis Dockery died after suffering a gunshot wound in the 3300 block of Mercedes Drive in Fayetteville, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Registered sex offenders charged after child pornography found at home
DVDs, laptop computers, cellphones and other electronic devices were seized Thursday when two Fayetteville men were arrested on child pornography charges, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Both men are registered sex offenders, according to a news release.
Animal shelter waives adoption fees during Clear the Shelters campaign
With its animal shelter currently at capacity, Cumberland County Animal Services is waiving adoption fees through Aug. 31, according to a county news release. Animal Services is participating in the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign this month.
Bridge over I-95 at Dunn closed after being struck by vehicle
A bridge over Interstate 95 in Dunn has been closed after it was damaged by an overheight vehicle, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. An unidentified vehicle struck the Pope Road bridge at Exit 72 and damaged its steel girders, according to a DOT news release.
